Canadian Province Notebook

This project will start now and continue until the end of Christmas break. The students have chosen their province. The schedule for completion is attached. As the student completes each task, the schedule sheet will be initialed by the teacher. If a task is completed early, the student will receive extra credit points.

The student will need a three-ring binder and plastic page protectors. As the pages are finished, carefully tear them out of the workbook and place in the page protector. Put the pages in the correct order. For extra credit, a title page may be created highlighting the name of the province and placed on the front cover of the binder (if the binder has a clear plastic “sleeve” on the front cover).

Students should keep track of the sources (encyclopedias, books, magazines, internet articles) they use in their research by using 3 by 5 cards. Page 7 of the first part of the notebook introduces how to do this. The information will be transcribed into the bibliography (one of the last pages to be finished). The 3 by 5 cards will also be used to record information needed for the reports.

Many of the pages will require pictures. You may use pictures from magazines or the Internet. If a student does not have Internet access at home or there is no printer at home, please contact me. I will try to help out. The student can make arrangements for me to print the pictures at home as a last resort. Research time in the computer lab will be put into the schedule. The computer lab’s printer is a black and white laser jet, so that is not optimal for the pictures. However, if a student is researching for a report, this would work.

I tried to allow extra time for the pages involving reports. The reports should be written in paragraphs. Use good topic sentences. Students may bring in their rough drafts for proofreading.

The December schedule may need to be modified, depending on the music program and its rehearsals. If any deadlines need to be changed, students will be notified as soon as possible. If there are any questions, my home phone number is: 770-1760.
